About

Joachim A. Koops is Assistant Professor of Political Science and Academic Director of the European Peace and Security Studies (EPSS) Programme at Vesalius College, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).

He is also Director of the Global Governance Institute (GGI) and Senior Associate Researcher at the Institute for European Studies at the VUB.

His research interests include the European Union as an international actor, the theory and practice of (effective) multilateralism, inter-organizational cooperation and rivalry (with special focus on NATO, the EU, United Nations and African Union) as well as military crisis management and peacekeeping.

Current research projects include the EU’s cooperation with NATO and the United Nations in the field of military crisis management, theories of cooperation and rivalry among major international organisations and lessons learned from the Standby High Readiness Brigade for United Nations Operations (SHIRBRIG) for UN Peacekeeping and African Capacity-Building.

Joachim holds a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) from the University of Oxford (UK), an MSc in European Politics, Economics and Law from the University of Turku (Finland), the Postgraduate Diploma in Law/Common Professional Examination in English and European Law from Oxford Brookes University, the Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (LPC) from the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice, University of Oxford and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Kiel (Germany).
